Carmel McCarthy
Director & Trainer
The vocational journey of Carmel McCarthy has taken her on various roads and terrains over her professional life. The youngest of six children, Carmel wase xpected to follow in the family traditions of forestry, teaching or marrying a farmer with good road frontage.
In the Marketing and Public Relations Department of AIB Carmel got a taste for the direction she was destined to take. Her sales and marketing skills were further developed when she joined her brothers in their insurance and auctioneer business. Selling houses in the 1980’s was quite the feat and an indicator of her sales acumen.
Deciding to change course, she joined a cosmetics company selling products to pharmacies countrywide. The next road led her to Belmont Photographic, where she sold their services to pharmacies and photo shops. Whilst with Belmont, Carmel was actively involved in their Public Relations Department and completed her Public Relations Institute exams. Her biggest achievement with Belmont was the success of the year-long campaign (1991–92) to raise awareness for disabled sport in Ireland. Considering, at that time, that there was little public awareness or media coverage of such events, her determination and tenacity paid off, and, as we know now, the rest is history.
Since 1998, Carmel has been with EMS & Associates as co-director of the company, and is primarily responsible for sales and business development. Her work in the psycho-social side of health & safety came from her interest in internal communications and social psychology, whilst studying public relations. She delivers awareness training on stress and bullying within the workplace, and her belief is that good communications and openness within organisations help both the individual and the business to grow.
When not working, she is kept busy with her four children, five grandchildren, two dogs, gardening, reading, playing bad golf and “tasting” good wine.
