Safety, Health & Welfare also sometimes referred to as Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) or Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is a multi-faceted discipline concerned with the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. It also is concerned with any person who can be affected by the activities of a workplace environment.

The goal of health and safety management is to foster a safe and healthy work environment for all stakeholders – employers, employees, clients, contractors, visitors and members of the public.

The health, safety and welfare of employees in Ireland are governed by national legislation, much of which is derived from European Directives. The primary piece of legislation governing the duties of employers to keep their workforce safe and healthy is the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005.

The cornerstone of good management for workplace activities is having in place a site-specific and up-to-date Health & Safety Statement. Your Safety Statement is a commitment in writing of all the measures that your organisation will take to prevent injury and ill health to your employees. It must be based on Risk Assessments that you have carried out that are specific to the work activities in the location to which it applies. It is a legal requirement under Section 20 of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005 to have a Safety Statement.
